Hello Amity students! This is Ethan from Sendai Amity! Every week, I will be posting a short article to help everyone practice reading! It's almost the end of February, and this year is a Leap Year! Let's talk about why we have an extra day this month.

A leap day, or a 29th day of February, is extra day to fix our calendar's time. In the Gregorian calendar, which is used worldwide today, a year is 365.242 days, or about 365.25, so an extra day is added every four years. If we didn't add leap days, our calendar would slowly move backwards, and in a few hundred years we would be celebrating Christmas in the summer! We'll continue to have a leap year every four years until 2100, which is a skip year when our calendar will finally be mathematically correct!

Hello Amity students! This is Ethan from Sendai Amity! Every week, I will be posting a short article to help everyone practice reading! We had some very warm weather this week, so let's talk about Groundhog Day!

Groundhog Day is a strange tradition in the Northeastern parts of America where people try and predict the weather using a groundhog, which is a large ground squirrel. Every year, on February 2nd, the town of Punxsutawney (PUNKs-uh-TAW-nee), Pennsylvania, brings out a groundhog at 7:25 AM. If the groundhog, named Punxsutawney Phil, sees his shadow, it will be a sign that there will be six more weeks of winter. If the groundhog does not see his shadow, there will be an early spring! During 2024's Groundhog Day celebration in Punxsutawney, an early spring was predicted!

Hello Amity students! This is Ethan from Sendai Amity! Every week, I will be posting a short article to help everyone practice reading! It's almost Valentine's Day, so let's talk about Valentine's day in America!

Valentine's day, named after Saint Valentine, is celebrated differently across the world. In Japan, girls usually give boys chocolates for Valentine's day, then boys give girls chocolates on White Day. However, in America, boys and girls give each other chocolates and candy on the same day! Many middle and high schools in America like to raise money by selling "candygrams," where you can buy candy at school and write a note to the person you want to give it to. Later, student council members will help distribute these candies. When giving candy to someone you like, it is common to ask, "Will you be my Valentine?" Making your own Valentine's day chocolates is very uncommon in America, and many people prefer to buy chocolates from a store instead.

Hello Amity students! This is Ethan from Sendai Amity! Every week, I will be posting a short article to help everyone practice reading! This week we will talk about schools in America!

While Japanese and American students both need 12 years of school, the grades are different! Japanese elementary school is from 1st to 6th grade, but American elementary school is 1st to 5th grade. Afterwards, junior high in Japan is counted using three years. In America, we call junior high “middle school,” which we count with 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. The biggest difference is high school! In Japan, students have three years of high school, but in America, we have 4! We count them using 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade. We also have special names for them. We like to say Freshman (or Frosh), Sophomore (or Soph), Junior, and Senior years.
