Every year, the Oxford dictionary chooses a word that is most popularly used. Let's look into 2023's word of the year - Rizz.

Rizz (noun) - style, charm, or attractiveness; the ability to attract a romantic partner. Shortened from the word "charisma."

For example, that man's rizz is too strong! He was able to get the attention of all the popular girls at school.

Different Ways to Say "Thank you!"

"Thank you" is one of the first expressions we learn in English but as you advance in learning English, you will learn a lot of colorful ways to change up some words. Today, let's learn about different ways to say "Thank you!"

  1. "You're the best!" This casual expression can be used for family and friends. For example,  you brought me my favorite dessert today, you're the best!

  2. "You're a lifesaver," this is to express extreme gratitude for someone. For example, I would have missed the train if you hadn't woken me up! You're a lifesaver!

  3. "I owe you," this is to express thanks to someone who has gone out of their way to help you. For example, you didn't have to take me to work today but I owe you one!

Today, let's learn about Quantifiers, these are words commonly used in informal English. They are used to determine the amount of something. Let's take a look at the quantifiers, 'each' and 'every.'

Each is used when you see the persons in a group as individuals. For example, there are five boys, each with a big smile on their faces. Another example is, the lottery winners each received one house and lot prizes.

Every is used when you see a group of people or something as one unit. For example, I used every pen in this pencase. Another example is, every ESL student took the TOEIC yesterday.

Today, let's learn about Phrasal Verbs. These verbs consists of a basic verb plus another word. For example, "look" is a verb and "look up" is also a verb but with a different meaning. Let's take a look at common Phrasal Verbs and their meanings,

  1. Brush up - to refresh or improve. For example, I want to brush up on my English skills before my trip to the United States.

  2. Cut back - to reduce or decrease. For example, The athlete cut back on carbohydrates for her training.

  3. Think over - to think about something. For example, she had a whole month to think over the university she wants to go to.
