National Native American Heritage Month
We start first with relocations. 10milion Native Americans lived in America before European colonizers learned about it. When the colonizers arrived they signed a law to remove Native Americans from the land they lived on which forced the Natives to relocate in a major movement known as the Trail of Tears.
During the Trail of Tears many Native Americans died from disease, malnutrition and bad weather. They were forced to walk many miles and as many as 4000 people died.
Native American Heritage month
Do you know who the Native Americans are? This month was recently recognized out of respect to these people.
These are the indigenous people that lived on the continent before the European settlers came and took over. The settlers (now known as Americans) took the land of the Natives and pushed them out.
This month we will learn a little about their culture and history.
