Did you know that octopuses have three hearts? Two help send blood to their gills, while the third pumps it around their body. Also, the first known recipe in history was for beer, written by the Sumerians over 5,000 years ago. Our brains send signals super fast—up to 268 miles per hour, which is faster than a sports car! And lightning strikes Earth about 8.6 million times every day, happening somewhere every second. There's always something new to learn about the world around us!

Many summer festivals in Japan have Bon Odori, a traditional dance where people move in a circle to music. This dance is part of Obon, a special time to remember ancestors. At festivals, people also enjoy food stalls selling snacks like takoyaki (octopus balls) and yakisoba (fried noodles). Some festivals have parades with big, colorful floats, while others have fireworks that light up the night sky. These events bring happiness and excitement to summer in Japan.

Japan’s rainy season, called tsuyu, has begun.
This season brings heavy rain and high temperatures, with more storms expected in eastern and western Japan. Despite the wet weather, it’s a great time to see colorful hydrangeas, misty forests, and glowing fireflies.
I asked the students what they enjoy the most about the rainy season and they said really like the bright flowers!

Japan’s summer snacks help people stay cool.
Most of my students really like Kakigōri which is soft shaved ice with sweet syrup. A handful of students like Mizu yōkan is a light jelly dessert and Hiyashi chūka which is cold noodles with toppings.
