Kojo Park, a perfect spot for picnics, ball games, and relaxing, also has an interesting history. It was once the site of the Takaoka Castle and though the castle is gone, the old moats and rivers remain. A beautiful spot for cherry blossom viewing in the spring, it also has a small, free art gallery and municipal history museum, a cafe filled with delicious treats, and a city sports centre to enjoy some exercise.
If you visit Kojo Park at the end of September you can witness the Manjo Matsuri festival where 30 volumes of Manyoshu poetry are read aloud for three days. -
The Great Buddha of Takaoka, is a symbol of our city, one of the three greatest Buddha icons in Japan. Originally crafted in 1745 in wood, it was rebuilt and finished in 1933 in bronze casting, using the craftmanship of local metal casters in Takaoka. Standing at 15.85 meters tall and weighing 65 tons, the Great Buddha is a testament to Takaoka ingenuity and craftmanship!
