My seminar is an opportunity to apply English that they learn at Amity, as well as new English, to something that they find interesting. Many children are interested in insects, and those that are afraid often do not know how interesting they really! In a fun and engaging environment, students can learn about some of the insects found on the island of Okinawa! In four lessons, students can learn about the insects, where they live, and how to catch them in English. The seminar will culminate in the creation of an insect craft of their choice. This larger-than-life insect will be labelled, in English, with interesting facts and collection information by the students.

Students will improve upon the vocabulary that they have already learned in our classes, as well as learn new vocabulary. Students will apply the phonics that they have learned in class in new and exciting ways through unique pronunciations of insects names. Students will also practice writing longer, more-complicated words than they typically write in their normal lessons at Amity. Finally, students will be able to better express themselves in English by learning vocabulary associated with their interests.

My seminar focuses on different theme parks and students can learn about different topics based on the park.
For example, they can learn about the nature and animals (science) of Hawaii when we learn about Aulani Resort.
We can do math using American dollars when talking about theme parks.
We will also discuss things like summer activities, sightseeing locations, and popular characters all while practicing language patterns useful for daily conversation and different grammar forms.

To read, children must understand the alphabetic principle- the idea that letters represent the sounds of the spoken language.
This Summer Reading Seminar will focus on increasing your child's phonics understanding and assisting them in becoming independent readers.
The primary goal of this seminar for beginning readers is to help them comprehend how letters are related to sounds (phonemes) to construct letter-sound correspondences and spelling patterns, and to help them learn how to apply this knowledge in their reading. For intermediate readers, this seminar will concentrate on the difficult sounds in the words, which include the
hard th, soft th, ch, sh, ng, r, wh, and ck sounds. While for advanced readers, this seminar will help develop their basic reading skills including reading fast, skimming for information, and identifying main ideas in informative reading passsages.
