Stay warm!

It's almost winter and its getting cold. I hope you are staying warm. The change in temperature usually means many people with be unfortunate enough to get sick.

This brings me to the expression "under the weather" which is used to mean sick or unwell. If I am feeling sick I might say I am feeling under the weather instead.

I hope no one is feeling under the weather. Be sure to stay warm this winter!

Japanglish can be a double-edged sword.

When learning English you might find that some words are very similar, if not the same, in Japanese from English. Words such as ホテル (hotel) and ハンバーグ (hamburger) are very easy to memorize. However, the Japanese language borrows some words from English and then makes small changes which make it so it can be hard to understand by English speakers as we don't use the same word even though it sounds like English. For example the word マフラー (muffler) used in Japan to describe the word "scarf" is a type of scarf, but when refering to the item of clothing it should be called a scarf. Here are some other words that student should becareful when memorizing because they may sounds similar, but their English version is different enough that you'll confuse listeners.

コンビニ - Convinience store

メーク - Makeup

ドイツ - Germany (not Dutch)

オートバイ - Motorcycle

Appreciate What You Have

Consider the expression; a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Before reading on take a moment to consider what it might mean. How could we use this statement?

Now take a moment to think about all the things you want and everything you are working hard to gain. It's great to work hard and earn things. It's great to be rewarded for your efforts, but we should also take time to consider what we already have. That's what this expression refers to. Appreciate the "bird in the hand" (your family, your job, your friendships, etc.) in your hand and don't be too distracted by the possible "two birds in the bush" (the possible promotion, new products that you want, etc.). It's possible we will not get the "two birds in the bush" but we already have the "bird in the hand".

Let's be thankful for that. Happy Thanksgiving!

How to study while commuting

Commuting is the English word to describe the trip from home to school/work. Some people walk or bike to school, in these cases maybe it's best to forego studying and pay attention to your surroundings. However, many of you go to school/work by train or in the back of mom's car. These are great chances to get some studying going as well as making the time go faster. Here are some ideas on how to study while commuting.

If you're like me reading a text book or any book on a vehicle makes you dizzy. Try listening to a podcast or an audiobook. Some great podcast for practicing English are "Culips English Podcast" and "The English We Speak".

A game you can play with the people you are with is to play "20 Questions". The idea of the game is to decide on something you can see and your opponent can ask 20 questions to try to guess what it is. "What color is it?", "Is it hot?", "Can you eat it?".

I hope these recommendations can make you commutes more productive. For better improving your English come visit us at Amity Fukuyama.
