This Saturday will mark the 2024 Winter Solstice. It is the day with the shortest amount of daylight of the year. After December 21st the days will start to get longer. However, the days will continue to get colder until March . This is mostly because the weather is driven by the oceans. Have a happy solstice!

What do you eat on Christmas.
Christmas in America is very different from Christmas in Japan. I was surprised to learn that fried chicken is a very popular Christmas food here. In America many people either eat baked ham or turkey on Christmas. This year I am excited to try having fried chicken on Christmas, it is always a great joy to take part in different cultural traditions.
The name ‘Christmas’ comes from the old English phrase Cristes maesse, which means ‘Christ’s mass’. Lots of people think X-Mas is just a modern-day abbreviation, but it actually dates back to the 1500's. ‘X’ represents the Greek letter ‘Chi’, the first letter in the Greek word for Christ, Χριστός (‘Christos’). So there you go, you can write X-Mas or Christmas on your cards without any worries. Merry X-Mas!
