■英語のイディオム(言い回し)A Green Thumb

英語には、多くのイディオム(言い回し)があります。

A Green Thumb「緑の親指」

さて、どういう意味でしょうか。

To have a green thumb means to have a gift for growing plants and keeping them healthy. With that said, I recently bought a plant to add a bit of color into my room and to take care of; while I don’t naturally have a green thumb, I am still set on trying my best to keep my plant alive and well.

Spooky Summertime

In America, the season of ghosts is definitely Autumn, and Halloween is the highlight of the season. But here in Japan, ghost stories and spooky events seem especially tied to summer instead. Is this because of Obon or the heat? Is it because the cicadas are singing so loudly and the moon is so large and orange? I am not sure, but it adds something special to summer nights. - Leah Sensei

Summer Festivals

It is the season of summer festivals! Recently, I watched the fireworks at Sakaiminato Festival, and their will be many more local events soon. What is your favorite thing to do at summer festivals? Personally, I like playing games at stalls, but I can never win a prize, so I just eat food instead.

Traditional Clothing

This week some of our students have come to school wearing yukata and jinbei to celebrate the summer holidays! Japan has a rich history of wearing traditional clothing for all sorts of occasions. My home country, the USA, is made up of many different cultural traditions from around the world. There aren't any distinct traditional clothes that are solely American. What do you think should be considered American traditional clothing? - Leah Sensei

Favorite Words

Do you have a favorite word in English? How about in Japanese? I think that there are some fun and interesting words in many different languages. Maybe the sound is funny, or maybe the meaning of the word is unusual. For example, I like the french word ``pomme de terre.`` It means potato, but the translation is actually ``apples of the earth.``

Unexpected Weather

Much of Japan is dealing with flooding and rainstorms this time of year. It can be hard to enjoy summer when you're stuck inside! When festivals and beach days are canceled, what do you and your family do for fun? Do you prefer relaxing at home, visiting museums or cafes, going to the movies, or shopping?

Rainy Season

These days, there has been a lot of heavy rain and lightning. We call this time of year ``the rainy season,`` in English. I learned that in Japanese, the it`s called ``tsuyu`` and it is written using the Kanji for ``plum`` and ``rain.`` I enjoy watching the lightening, but I don`t like hearing the thunder.
