Do you know how to respond to "How are you?"

Hello Everyone. I hope that all is well!

Today we are going to discuss how to respond to the question "How are you?"

It seems that many Japanese learners of English seem to answer this question very literally by saying "I am sleepy" or "I am not good". Although those answers are grammatically correct, they don`t sound natural and are a bit too direct and literal. They are responses that you would use with someone close to you in a personal setting such as your home.

Instead of answering directly, people usually say "I`m good" or "I`m ok/alright" before passing the question back or 'diving into' a topic such as "I went to Joyful last week". "How are you?" is simply used to 'get the ball rolling' and you will express your real feelings (such as I`m not good) once the conversation has become more personal. It is a bit too 'heavy' at the beginning.

I hope this helps you better understand how to repond to this useful 'ice breaker'!

L-Sensei

Glossary

dive into - to begin, usually quickly
get the ball rolling - to help things move faster, to a more desired place
heavy - serious
ice breaker - something said at the beginning to help start the conversation

A Mountain? That looks like a Table!?

Hello everyone!

I hope that you had a great weekend.

Today I would like to introduce to you, Table Mountain. It is a mountain that is completely flat at the top and does not have a peak! There is even a mountain beside it that is shaped like a chair. Could this have been a giant`s dinner table in the past!?

It is located in the city of Cape Town in South Africa and is a popular tourist attraction. People typically hike Table Mountain or they ride the cable car to the top. I assure you that both options are incredibly fun!

It usually takes 1-2 hours to get to the top and you can take pictures of the beautiful view of Cape Town on your way to the top!

Visit Cape Town sometime and enjoy Table Mountain and the spectacular view of the city!
