Hello Everyone I hope you have been having a great week.
Today I would like to talk about reading lips and how it can help you become better at English.
Learning a different language can prove to be quite difficult. Especially one that has pronunciation and grammar much different to your own. There are many different strategies you can employ to help make learning a bit easier and faster. One such strategy is lip reading.
How does lip reading work?
When listening to someone speak in your targetted language, you can look at their lips while they are speaking. Your brain will recognise the sounds and the movements of the lips and the mouth. It will make it easier to remember how to pronounce a word when you are able to recognise the movements of the lips` and the mouths of people who speak the language.
If you think about your own language. You are able to recognise mouthed words (words spoken without sound) very easily even though you cannot hear anything. To practice you can watch a TV show in your targeted language and look at the lips of the speaker. Listen for one minute. Listen again with the sound off and see if there are any words you can recognise. If you can recognise a word it means that your brain has made a connection between the sounds and the lip movement.
This is also useful for learning an accent. British and Americans prnounce words differently so their mouth movements are different. So much so that I can recognise that a person is British with the sound off the TV by looking at how they move their mouth.
Try it out! Lip reading is an easy way to help boost your language skill!
Till next time!
