It`s a Catch 22

Hello Everyone! I hope you`re having a fantastic week!

Today we will be taking a look at a very useful English expression. That expression is "It`s a catch 22!"

This expression is used when there is something that you or someone else wants, or you are discussing something that has good and bad things about it. An example would be FAME. "Would you like to be famous?" is a common question in English conversation and in my experience teaching English most Japanese people say "no" when they are asked this question. Why is that?

They typically respond by saying that they would not like to be bothered by strangers and that they would prefer privacy over a public image. They only focus on the negative aspects of being famous. Being famous does ofcourse have positive things about it such as having more opportunities available to you.

This makes being famous a "catch 22". If you want to be famous, you will likely be rich and have tons of fans and get lots of attention from people but there will also be downsides such as having little to no privacy. You have to be willing to take the bad with the good if you want to be famous.

The next time you are discussing something that has good and bad sides to it you can say "It`s a catch 22" to describe it.

I hope you enjoyed this article.

Have a splendid rest of the week!

Let`s learn a new portmanteau!

Hi everyone! I am back with another portmanteau. We already learned what a portmanteau is last time, therefore I`m going to introduce "Cosplay". Did you know that cosplay is a combination of the words costume and play. Were you surprised that it was actually a portmanteau?. Although the term was coined by Nobuyuki Takahashi, it was Myrtle Rebecca Douglas Smith Gray Nolan who popularized the concept of cosplaying by attending a Science Fiction Convention in New York City dressed in “futuristic costumes”.

Now let`s learn how to use the portmanteau cosplay in different tenses:

Present Tense:
1. I cosplay with my friend, and it`s a great way to express my creativity.

Present Perfect Continuous Tense:
1. My friend and I have been cosplaying for 3 years now.

Past Continuous (Progressive) Tense:
1. I am cosplaying with a friend in an event.

Past Perfect Tense:
1. I cosplayed in an event last week and I won the first prize.

Are you Hangry?

Hi everyone! I hope you are all doing well. I`m back with a new exciting topic today. Have you ever heard of the word portmanteau? In the realm of linguistic, portmanteau is a creative way of combining words to form a new one, like "brunch" which is a blend of the the words breakfast and lunch.

Now that you have an idea on what portmanteaus are. Let`s learn our first portmanteau today. As what you`ve probably noticed from the title, our word for the day is "Hangry".

What is Hangry?

Hangry is a combination of the words hungry and angry. It describes a hunger-induced irritability that can turn even the kindest people into a snarling beast. This is also a common experience , often characterized by a sense of urgency to satisfy one`s hunger before the situation escalates.
Let`s delve into this fascinating slang term and find out about its quirks with a fun quiz!

Quiz Time:

How Hangry Are You?

1. What would be your reaction if someone invited you to eat but it`s already 3pm and you haven`t eaten since breakfast?

A. Relieved, that you can finally eat.
B. You decide to wait till dinner and prefer to eat at home.
C. Frustrated, because it triggered your hunger more.

2. Your stuck in traffic for 3 hours and your stomach is growling . What would be your mood?

A. Patient
B. Annoyed
C. Hangry

3. Your friend takes the last slice of sushi without asking. How would you react?

A. Not a big deal. It`s just a sushi.
B. A bit annoyed.
C. Irritated/ Very Angry

Result:

Mostly A`s- Congratulations! You are patient ,even in the face of hunger.
Mostly B`s- You`re moderately in between hungry and hangry so don`t forget to bring a snack with you.
Mostly C`s- Oh! Oh! You have the hangry in you. Be careful, and don`t let it get to you. Having a snackbar with you might help.
