英語でのあいさつといえばまず、
How are you? ですよね。
大人の皆さん、これに対してどのように答えますか？
おそらく大半の方は、中学時代に
I'm fine, thank you. と答えましょう、と習ったのではないでしょうか。
実はこれ、あまり自然ではありません。この場合のfineは「大丈夫」という意味で、病気やけがなど何か良くないことがあった後に「私は大丈夫」と言っているニュアンスなんです。
ではどのようにいうのが自然だと思いますか？

正解は、
I'm good. です！ここでのgoodは、「問題ない」というニュアンスなので、特に良いことがあったわけでなくても使えます。
他にも、I'm great / not bad/ pretty good / so-so ... などなど、答え方はたくさんあります。

On this day in 1386, The Treaty of Windsor between Portugal and England is ratified at Windsor strengthening ties between the two kingdoms. This is the (oldest diplomatic alliance still in force). The treaty guarantees the mutual security of both nations and strengthens commercial ties. [1]
Also on this day: In 1865, President Andrew Johnson issues a proclamation declaring armed resistance in the South is virtually at an end; this is the commonly accepted end date of the American Civil War.

That's right! It's that time again!
This week's idiom is (Comparing Apples to Oranges)!
The meaning: Comparing two things that are not alike and should not be compared together.
For example:
a) Ice cream sales go up in the summer just like car sales do! They are the same, therefore cars and ice-cream sales increase in the summer.
b) What!? They have nothing to do with each other. Car sales increased in the summer this year because the summer incentives this year were better than they were last year or any year before. This is historically true if you examine the previous years of car sales.
Ice cream sales increase in the summer because of the weather, not because of incentives for ice cream are better, therefore this is like comparing "apples to oranges" in my opinion.
