Today is a very special day. Today is FRIDAY THE 13^TH! AHHH!!! (ง'̀-'́)ง

In the United States, Friday the 13^th is a day that makes everyone tremble in fear.

Just like how crossing paths with a black cat or breaking a mirror is considered unlucky, many people also believe that Friday the 13th brings bad luck. It is unknown when this particular tradition began, but the number 13 itself has been known to be an unlucky number for centuries -- much like how the number 4 is unlucky in Japan!

Western popular culture continued the idea of this terrifying and blighted day through examples such as the thriller novel Friday, the Thirteenth (1907) written by Thomas William Lawson and the horror movie Friday the 13th (1980). This movie introduced the hockey mask-wearing killer named Jason,  popularizing the Friday the 13^th superstition not only in the U.S. but all around the world. Even in Japan, many Japanese people know of Jason the killer that comes out on Friday the 13^th!

Today, we will be talking about a holiday from the United States of America: Labor Day. Labor Day is celebrated on the first Monday of every September. This means that Labor Day was on September 2^nd this year! `Labor` is another word for `work`, so Labor Day celebrates the social and economic achievements of the American workers.

In other words, Labor Day is a holiday that celebrates the workers that continue to contribute to their communities and their country! The first Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882 in New York City. After that, more and more countries began to adopt their own versions of a Labor Day holiday. For example, Labor Day in Japan is on May 1^st!

People usually spend Labor Day having a picnic, a barbeque, or a pool party with family and friends. It all depends on where you live! Americans who live near the ocean might go to the beach, and other Americans who live near a lake will go there. It is informally known as the last day of summer – even though the first day of autumn is not until September 21^st to 24^th!
