Welcome to December! This week, we are discussing the most popular holiday of the month – Christmas! While there are many different reasons why various countries and cultures celebrate a version of Christmas, this iconic winter holiday`s origins lie in the religion of Christianity. Christmas is a day to celebrate the birth of Jesus – a historical figure integral to the Christian faith.
However, since the early 20th century, Christmas has also become a secular family holiday, observed by Christians and non-Christians alike. For example, many people in Japan celebrate Christmas as a couple’s holiday, spending the day with their special partner eating fried chicken and cake!

Now that Thanksgiving is officially over, today`s post is about another holiday that first gained traction in the United States… Black Friday! This is not actually a holiday but rather a shopping event that many stores and companies partake in. The Friday right after Thanksgiving is always designated as `Black Friday`.
The most common story behind the American Black Friday tradition goes like this: Retail companies used to record losses in red and profits in black in their accounting books. After an entire year of operating at a loss (red) stores would earn a profit (black) on the day after Thanksgiving. This was because holiday shoppers would spend so much money on discounted merchandise in preparation for Christmas! Although this story is a bit inaccurate, it is the story behind Black Friday that is widely accepted.
Since then, the one-day sale has morphed into a four-day event for the entire weekend. Other store events have spawned such as Small Business Saturday/Sunday and Cyber Monday. On Black Friday itself, stores have started opening earlier and earlier – the most dedicated shoppers can head out right after their Thanksgiving meal on Thursday night!
This retail tradition has spread to many other countries all around the world! Even in Japan, many stores and companies have begun to offer sales during the same weekend. Will you go Black Friday shopping this year? Let us know in your next Amity lesson!
