How can you explain O-bon to foreign people? Let's talk about some words and phrases you can use

to explain what Obon is in English.

• Festival of Souls ~ this is the English term to explain the meaning of O-bon.


• Lighting of Lanterns ~ during this festival, Japanese people light lanters to welcome deceased ancestors back home.


• Bon Dance ~ this is the English term for Bon-odori which is a custom performance during Obon holiday.


• Obon Holiday ~ term for Obon yasumi. A holiday that is usually during August 13-16.


• Spirits ride a horse and a cow to travel back and forth between the afterlife. ~ this is a phrase to explain a belief in Japan that spirits ride a horse and a cow to come home quicker.

Is writing a bit challenging for you? Maybe you take too much time in writing during your Eiken exams or
when you do your English essay homework.

Let me share some simple ways to make writing essays fun and easier.

1. Learn more vocabulary words and their tenses.
~ Knowing more English words can help you better write meaningful sentences in your essay. You can increase your Word Bank
by reading sample essays or short stories. Take note of words you don't understand and look for their meaning. Then, reread
how it is used in a sentence.

2. Make a flow chart
~ Writing ideas inside the flow chart can help you relate your ideas with each other. Making sure that the details are not
going outside of the topic. You can search about Essay Flow Charts online.

3. Make your essays personal.
~ One big mistake is to memorize sample answers. Make sure you are writing about your own ideas and thoughts. This will take away
stress and will make you enjoy writing! Show your personality in your essay!
